Zabar's (800-221-3347, 212-787-2000) has the heavy duty Kitchenaid K45ss 4.5qt mixer on sale for $169.95. They will ship at extra cost. Usual department store sale price is $200 or more. Great machine for bread kneading, cake doughs mixing, and cream and egg-white whipping.

$170 for this model is the standard price in the catalogs of the catalog discount houses; I do believe that it is often on sale for somewhat less. The bigger model (K5SS) is at $240. Kitchenaid used to make a smaller model, which vanished from the catalogs shortly after we bought one. I saw a Kitchenaid mixer at an estate sale a couple months ago for about $100; that's another source worth keeping in mind. You never know, except from general appearance, though, how hard it has been used. Will
