[net.cooks] KitchenAid is in Danger.

It was reported the other night on "The Nightly Business Report" that
The Hobart Corporation of Troy, Ohio is selling its KitchenAid division to
Whirlpool. Their trash compactor and dishwasher are being sold to yet another
company but will be marketed by Whirlpool.

One can only hope that Whirlpool will maintain the quality or, indeed,
the same product line as Hobart, but that's improbable. I have bought parts for
my ten-year-old KitchenAid coffee mill and rebuilt it. Other coffee mills a
riveted together. The food preparers, the k-5A and the K45 are similarly
quality in construction. My K45 is ten years old also and is flawless.

Will we be able to get parts for them 5, 10 years from now? What about
brushes for the motors?

I hate to see quality companies disappear. Hobart will continue to
manufacture their fine welders, but that won't help us in the kitchen.

	Buy your spare parts now.

If you're in the Portland area, the parts warehouse is over in
Milwaukie:

	Hobart Sales & Service
	5759 SE International Way
Milwaukie, Oregon (Just off Hwy. 224 at Harmony Rd.)

Sad to say, Kenwood - manufacturers of comparable-quality food mixers - has
also been bought. [That's KenWOOD, by the way, not to be confused with the
Sears label KenMORE.] I believe it was Farberware who bought them, and
some of the attachments for the Kenwood mixers are already unavailable.

The main hope is that as long as small commercial kitchens continue to
exist there will be a need for tough, high-quality commercial kitchen
equipment.
