[comp.graphics] ISO/IEC JTC1 SC24 WG5 meeting report

kirsch@gmdzi.UUCP (Berthold Kirsch) (08/16/90)

Report on the SC24 WG5
(Computer Graphics - Validation and Testing, Registration)
meeting in
   Ottawa, Canada (July 23 - 27, 1990)

The Ottawa meeting has been attended by 6 delegates representing ANSI, DIN and
JISC. As SC24 WG1 had its meetings at the same time discussion with WG1 experts
could take place. The delegates worked on resolving comments on the Committe
Draft (CD) 10 641 "Conformance Testing of Implementations of Graphics
Standards" letter ballot (Votes: 8/5/1/2: Approve/Approve with
Comments/Disapprove/Abstain) and on the result of two letter ballots on
registration proposals (SC24 N503: 10/2/0/1; SC24 N504: 4/0/5/1). Discussion
started on revising TR 9973 (Registration Procedures) by applying defect
reports. An initial document will be discussed at the next Registration
rapporteur group meeting, November 1990, Copenhagen.

Due to the few member bodies represented at the meeting there have been
problems in addressing comments of member bodies not present. WG5 sees a danger
to continue its work if member bodies don't send delegates to future meetings.

The rapporteur for Validation and Testing (project 24.7) has resigned. SC24
member bodies are requested to nominate candidates.

For project 24.9 (Registration) Michele Davis (NCGA) from ANSI is recommended
as editor.

The revised ISO CD 10 641 is recommended to be registered as DIS and sent out
for ballot after having a final review at the November meeting.

The registration proposals sponsored by SC24 have been accepted to be entered
into the register of graphical items. The proposals sponsored by ANSI also have
been accepted although there have been lots of NO votes. The response document
(WG5 N63) explains the changes applied to the proposals or the reason for not
changing the proposal.

All recommendation have been approved unanimously.

Recommendation 1: Meeting schedule

    Germany), 2 days per project

DIS Nov 90; IS Oct 91
Recommendation 4, 5: Response documents and acceptance of Registration proposals
Recommendation 6: Document editor for project JTC1 24.9
Recommendation 7, 8: Rapporteur vacancy for project JTC1 24.7
Recommendation 9: Support of WG5 work
Recommendation 10, 11, 12: Registration procedures review

Validation and Testing rapporteur group meeting, July 23/24, 1990

The comments from the DP ballot on SC24 N409 'Conformance Testing of
Implementations of Graphics Standards' (CD 10641) have been discussed. Although
BSI disapproved no BSI delegate has been present. The group had problems to
incorporate the BSI proposed changes as the comments have been very general.
Some of them have been resolved by Issues decided at former meetings.

The editor has been instructed to produce a revised version of the conformance
testing standard which shall be sent out as DIS 10641. At the Copenhagen
meeting in November a final review shall be made. It shall be sent out for
registration as DIS and letter ballot end November 1990. At the meeting in
September/October 1991 VT wants to deal with results of the DIS ballot. VT
expects to have the final standard in October 1991.

Registration rapporteur group meeting, July 25/26, 1990

The Registration rapporteur group first discussed the vacancy of an editor to
apply changes to TR 9973. Michele Davis (NCGA for ANSI) volunteered to become
document editor. She will be able to attend all meetings in the next two years.
Registration also has the problem of staffing and support, up to now Japan has
no active group in registration. There has been only ANSI and DIN to "achieve
consensus", however all comments have been considered.

The CGM registration proposals which have been sponsored by SC24 have been
accepted with minor editorial changes.

The ANSI sponsored registration proposals which received a lot of NO votes have
been accepted after considering all comments. It has been decided to accept
proposals which do not contain all language bindings or encodings (the
procedures also do not list all possible SC24 standards) or which contain
functions which are in the standardisation process now (CGM Amm.3). It is
possible to add language bindings or encodings for a registered graphical item
or delete an item if later it in contradiction to a new standard.

The discussion on the ANSI sponsored registration proposals again demonstrated
that TR 9973 needs revision. It has been decided to apply defect reports. TR
9973 will be the base document from which further work will be done.

The main changes for TR 9973 are:
- the registration authority will keep the list of registerable item classes
- there will be a procedure to add new item classes
- the list of SC24 standards which need registration will be open
- the forms need not to be filled out, only the structure has to be followed,
there will be a separate description on information needed provided in an
information package from the registration authority
- there will be annexes with guide-lines how to develop a language binding or an
encoding, this work has to be done in liaison with WG3 and WG4

Following the discussion the editor will produce an initial document for the
November meeting. Member bodies are invited to send position papers.
