[comp.graphics] .sit files, giffer106.sit, and viewing gif files

gary@corwin.CCS.Northeastern.EDU (gary duhaney) (08/30/90)

Just when I thought I figured out how to view gif files on my mac
something else happens. It all started when:

I didn't know how to change a gif file giffer106.sit into an
excuteable file for my mac. this program is a gif viewer, or so it
claims to be(about to delete it for lack of patience). I finally
figured out that I should use unsit to remove the StuffIt files( or
at least thats what I think I should have done). I then ported them
over to my mac using NCSA telnet binary, and Macbinary enabled.
I now have 3 files from the giffer106.sit, a .data, a .info and
a .rsrc file. Don't know if there is any other part of the puzzle
that I'm neglecting to do. But anyway Giffer1.06.rsrc runs on my
mac IIcx (using Supermac color monitor). But everytime I try to load
a gif file on it all I see are lines of useless graphics. I get the
giff file by doing the following.

Grab the files off the net. cat them in their respective order. then
uudecode the resulting file, then I port it over. I have even tried
manually removing all the junk in the file that the rn places in it
after it saves the article, but to no avail.

I'm about to till somebody(Eddie Murphy).

Thanks in advance.

Your post wasn't 100% clear, but you also do need to remove the
signatures, etc. -- before you uudecode it, it should be one long stream
of unintelligible lines (M67fvKJH36532...whatever.) You ca search for
lines that don't fit by doing /^[^M]<cr> in vi; the only such lines
(that don't start with M) should be the "begin" and "end" lines, and
one or two shorter lines right before the "end" line.

Uhhhhhhh......

This sounds like you used some kind of unsit program on this file
while it was still on the Unix machine.

Have you tried just porting the .sit file into your Mac,
and then using the Stuffit program on your Mac to decode it?

And yes, .sit does indicate that you are dealing with a Stuffit file,
and it should be unpacked with the most recent working version of Stuffit
you can get your hands on.
