[net.music] CFNY-FM sold

Readers of this group will remember various items about CFNY-FM Toronto,
a "new music" station, apparently a rarity. For a while, it looked as though
it, too, was going to go the way of the dodo, as the owners wanted to get out
of the radio business and a variety of buyers surfaced, some of which would
have changed the format radically. The station was sold Friday the 25th to a
company that promises to keep the format, citing that the new music is
attracting a "substantial and growing audience of young people".
Moreover, the new owners will carry out the long overdue plan of moving
the transmitter from the suburbs to the top of the CN Tower, putting the
station on an equal footing with the two major AOR FM stations. With luck,
the station really will keep or even improve its format, the stronger signal
will boost its popularity, and, with still more luck, the station may provide
a model for other cities.
