Hi, First, I'd like to thank everyone who responded to my post asking how $70.00 for this book compared with other areas "around the globe" (okay, I kept it to the US). I received _so_ many helpful responses that thanking everyone individually would take a l o n g time. I think others might be interested in the results of my question, so here's what we found out: The result of the survey shows a price range on this book anywhere from $52.00 on the low end (discount bookstore) all they way up through the full $70.00. List price on the book is $64.50. Apparently a little hunting can easily get the book down to $60.00 or so, and a little more might save $15.00-$20.00. The place I saw the book was our local B. Daltons Software Etc. This is the second time I've found out they are selling books _above_ list_price! I don't mind them making some profit, but being unreasonable isn't the way to attract my business. The first time was with the K&R C 2nd Ed. It contained a price list in the back of the book for various texts among which it was included. B. Daltons wanted about $5.00 over list. Summary Summary: Foley, van Dam, etc. 2nd Edition is a greatt book, again likely to be _the_ standard, and anyone interested in graphics should go out and buy it. However, AVOID B. DALTONS UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE - THEY'LL GOUGE YOU! You should find it for around $60.00 as an average. JPM -- John P. When we are already talking about the Foley, van Dam book, I want you to know that you are discussing prices in the range between $60 and $70, but here in Sweden the Big Book-Shop in Stockholm, wants almost 900 SKR, which is about $150. But lucky me, that our technical institute's bookshop sell it for 500 SKR. Phew! Thats about $85. Ron Birk

Phew! Thats about $85. An other solution is to buy it directly from the publisher. Price in Finland is then $60 + purchase tax (20%) = $72. Of course, you can't compare the prices here or there or in USA. We should ask what is the salaries in USA, in Sweden, in Finland, if we would like to know more about the prices. But, for example the Springer Verlag has a contract with a Finnish bookstore: If I order a book directly from Springer, I get a book from the bookstore and it's costs much more. Instead of ordering a book I order a Pro Forma for the book. When I get it, I pay it and get my book from the Springer directly. :-) By the way, how to avoid the purchase tax? ;-) Juhana Kouhia jk87377@tut.fi

Dalton was charging more than list but found out after I had already bought the book. I don't want to make excuses for B. Dalton, nor advertise for them necessarily, but you can get a 10% discount on all books at B. Dalton by joining their Frequent Reader Club. When they first started this deal they were charging $5.00 to join rather than the supposed normal cost of $10.00. I know they extended the half price offer several times but don't know if it is still valid. Even at $10.00, if you buy a lot of books, you can save a bit of money especially if B. Dalton is the most convenient place to buy your books. Note that the 10% off does not apply to B. Dalton Software Etc. stores nor Software, Etc. departments within a regular B. Dalton, but does apply to the computer books in the regular computer section of regular B. Dalton stores (does that make sense :-)). Walden Books also has a Preferred Readers Club too, but their computer section is usually not as good a B. Dalton. ==-->> Standard disclaimers applied.
