[comp.graphics] Is there an accepted format for LaPlacian pyramid files?

dragonvi@milton.u.washington.edu (Scott Degnan) (11/23/90)

I'll skip the Obsorry-I-don't-read-this-group grovel, and
ask a question.

I've got about 400 MB of .gif files sitting around and
like you probably know, the .gif is a lousy compression format.
A couple weeks ago, I read an article on LaPlacian Pyramid
compression, and since it looks I'm going to have some time on
my hands, decided to write a laplacian compression routine. It
seems a good idea that is should be compatible with pre-existing
pyrimid files, if the critters exist.

So. (1) Has the standard been defined by a responsible group?
(2) If not, is there a general format that is being used? (3) If
not, is there one you'd like to see? and finally (4) Can I get
out of the whole thing? Is there a gif2lap.c floating around?

Thanks.
Scott
