I'm working on a program to display several scatter plots of values from an ongoing process in order to monitor it. The immediate application will be to monitor a function minimization algorithm, to see how it's doing, maybe to allow the viewer to make suggestions to the minimizer, etc. The appropriate scale for the plots won't be known in advance, and the desiderata for a nice looking plot may be quite complicated, but the plots should adapt themselves to be as nice looking as possible on the fly.
