[comp.graphics] how to see GIF images?

gdr@PacBell.COM (Guy D. Ridley) (11/30/90)

Two very basic questions:

I've ftp'd some GIF images from another site to our local machine.
Now I would like to:

1) Download these to my Compaq.
(Is this something I can do with my communications package (ProComm)?)

2) View the images.
(What software do I need to do this? Is it something I need to purchase,
or is the source or binaries available somewhere?)

Since these questions seem to be far below the level of discussion in this
group, please email any helpful advice. Thanks.

It somewhat depends on the operating system of your local host, but
if it is Unix you need Kermit or Zmodem at the your host. At you PC
many if not most telecommunications packages (MsKermit, Telix,
Procomm) or an external protocoll such as Zmodem in the DSZ packages
will do. The same goes even if your host is VAX/VMS but the
programs for the host may be more difficult to locate on the net.

Unix Zmodem is available from uwasa.fi archives /unix/ts directory
by anonymous ftp or mail server. MsKermit, Telix, Procomm, DSZ are
all available from from the /pc/pd2 directory.

There is also a wealth of information and utilities available on
these methods of file transfers. Let me just list
  /pc/ts/tsans029.txt
  /pc/ts/tsfaq14.arc
  /pc/ts/tspfon29.arc
  /pc/ts/tskerm24.arc
  /pc/pd/zdoc0108.zip.

To view GIF files you need one of the many GIF viewers (most of them
shareware). You can find a lot in the /pc/gif directory at uwasa.fi
starting from cshow82a.lzh.

Some readers of comp.graphics might nevertheless find part material
of interest in the above so I choose to post.
