ADVANCED WARNING: Call for Attendence (just approved, now planning). We tried to do this 2 years before. This time we WILL do it. The Bay Area ACM/SIGGRAPH will have a ski/graphics "meeting." Site: Lake Tahoe. Approximate date: February, two week-days bordering on a weekend (MT or TF). Exact days TBD (probably next week). No registration fee, but housing costs. Ski during the day, talk graphics on the lifts, hack graphics at night. This is intended as a serious meeting 8^), nerds on skis. Attendence: In addition to the indignation of having to take your own time off, potentially attendees must submit at least a one paragraph description of their interests in graphics. This is similar to the first Usenix Graphics workshops. You may be expected to "present" 10-15 minutes about your work. Acceptance: we haven't figured this out yet, it depends on how many interested people submit abstracts (we got 2 dozen last time). We want to try and balance: hardware, software, end-users (scientists and artists). We should give additional priority to Bay Area ACM/SIGGRAPH members (cheap $10 per year), but that's no guarantee. Technology: We will try to provide sufficient power outlets for those bringing your own computers (Macs, PCs, SUNs, SGI PIs). Limited Internet access will be arranged. We will try to have reasonable media: 35 mm slide projectors, at least 2 (VHS and Umatic) VCR formats. Disk and tape drives as we can arrange them. Limit 12-16 people contingent upon housing: dorm style, rustic, bring your own sleeping bag. Dining: on your own, in groups, or communal kitchen. Arrangements are meant to be low cost for grad students and those on a low budgets. If you want an expensive hotel, you arrange it. The housing we are planning will be about $40 (2 nights) extra if you stay on a weekend. Skiing: North Shore: Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, Flatstar. Snow? We hope, otherwise, we hack. Transportation: On your own. Carpools from the Bay Area maybe arranged (talking nerds on the 4-hour drive up to the Lake, what a concept!), but attendees from other sites (like the previous attempts from Austin, Portland, and Indiana) must arrange your own. Reno is 40 miles away and South shore of Tahoe has a airport. This is a hack job if you have not guessed. What if I don't ski? Then, you can stay in and hack. Topics: All the usual graphics topics: what ever you wish. Telecommuting. X-C contingent to be lead by Bloomenthal. Jello by Heckbert? Interested parties should mail application abstracts to: siggraph@pioneer.arc.nasa.gov Let's pull this off. --e. nobuo miya, NASA Ames Research Center, eugene@orville.nas.nasa.gov {uunet, mailrus, other gateways}!ames!eugene
