[comp.graphics] Conversion of BMP or PCX images for use on Sun

gregg@rm1.UUCP (Gregg Zupcsics) (12/27/90)

I have some images in BMP format that I'd like to be able to display on
a Sun Sparcstation, I have tools to display images on the Sun (e.g. xloadimage)
but I don't have any conversion programs that will
translate between BMP and the formats which these tools accept (e.g. GIF).
I can convert the BMP images to PCX if that helps any.
Can anyone tell me what tools will convert images between BMP or PCX
and GIF formats and where I can find them? Is there another target format
which is easier to convert images to and which will work on a Sparcstation
running Motif?
   Thanks much in advance.

There is a shareware/public domain (don't remember which) program called
CVTGIF that will convert the PCX format to GIF format. It may be available
from the SIMTEL archives and such. It's for the PC. You should also
be able to do what you want with Jeff's tools - see his "read this before
you post column" in this newsgroup.

In case you have not found what you want, there is a program
(shareware I believe, possibly fully public domain) called "Graphic
Workshop" from Alchemy Mindworks that can convert from BMP files to GIF
files, as well as conversions between postscript, PCX, GEM IMG, and several
others. The program also does some basic scaling, dithering, and rotating.

This program is usually found as GRAFWKxx.ZIP where xx is the version. It is
available on many BBS's and possibly is in the SIMTEL or wuarchive archives.
If you can not find it, let me know and I will mail it to you.
