[comp.graphics] Ray Tracing and Displacement Mapping

   I was wondering if there are any good references on the topic of
implementing displacement mapping with a ray tracing renderer?
Specifically how do you acount for displacement mapping of smooth
surfaces defined by equations without breaking them up into polygons?

If the surface that should be at a point is displaced, what is the
best way to find out what actually is there.
