============================================================================== "P A P E R B A N K" P R O J E C T ------------------------------------- Juhana Kouhia INTRODUCTION ------------ I'm a computer science student in my second year at Tampere University of Technology, Finland. I have organized and run the 'Paper Bank' project for computer graphics papers since December 1990. The idea of this project is to distribute through the international computer network in electronic format theses, reports, or any papers which are freely distributable. This allows faster and wider dissemination than traditional methods. For example, people can take a new thesis from the other side of the world, print it out, and make copies of it for people at their site. There have been a couple of misunderstandings about this project, so I wish to clarify the distribution policy: -I do not distribute unpublished papers. -I do not forward unpublished papers to organizations like ACM or IEEE for publishing in their journals. -Theses and papers published in journals have been reviewed by experts. -Every paper is in the Net by permission of the author; I do not assume responsibility for distributing papers illegally if the author does not have permission to distribute her/his paper. -My work is only to take the paper and put it onto the anonymous FTP site(s) and update the list of the papers currently on the Net. I'm doing this in my free time without any pay and my project has nothing to do with the Tampere University of Technology or with the Finnish Academic and Research Network Project FUNET, except that I can use their computers. WHERE CAN YOU GET THE PAPERS? ----------------------------- Papers are in several sites which have an anonymous FTP server and have a bit of disk space for this project. For example, you can take latest NetPapers-file from nic.funet.fi [128.214.6.100], directory pub/graphics/papers. The file contains info about the papers in the Net; unfortunately there are not many papers yet. (Ask me or your system administrator for more information about how to use FTP if you don't know.) Data entry for the paper is the roffbib-format: %K-field specifies a short key which tells in what name the paper is on the disk, %A-fields specifies the author(s) of the paper, %T-fields specifies the title of the paper. You can find more information from the manual page of the addbib command in Unix systems. I have used the %O-field to specify from which site(s) you can get the paper. Format of the electronic papers is mainly PostScript. PostScript is chosen because it is a less editable format than others and is the common language for laser printers. File sizes for normal articles are about 50k, but a thesis with 180 pages could be over 1M. HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT NEW PAPERS? --------------------------------- I inform readers of the comp.graphics (UseNet news group) about new papers by sending a short information article. If the mentioned news group is not available I can send you a note via e-mail -- joining my mail-list is possible by sending mail to me. HOW TO SEND NEW PAPERS TO THE BANK? ----------------------------------- Sending the paper to me is possible via anonymous FTP. I work as a moderator and updater for the 'Paper Bank' and therefore I would like to get the incoming papers directly to me instead of sending them to the 'Bank' computers. The directory for incoming papers is in nic.funet.fi, pub/graphics/papers/incoming. If FTP is not available at your site, you can send the paper on IBM PC compatible, Macintosh or Amiga computer 3.5" or 5"1/4 diskette(s) via air or surface mail. I can convert the paper from several other formats to the PostScript format if you don't have such converters. Contact me for more information.
