How do you all convert a 24-bit image to an 8-bit image? Mine always end up slotchy and kinda scruffy. My software (Photoshop, Mac II) provides pattern and diffusion dither, but one looks, well patterned, and the other looks splotchy. I've experimented with merging neighboring, similar colors into one, but that ends up looking like an oil painting. How does one create a stunning 8-bit image from a stunning 24-bit scan?
