[comp.graphics] refs on rendering shadows

For our second quarter graphics class, I'll be animating a 3d chess game
(possible precursor to an interactive game).  The passage of time will
be emphasized by the sun going over the board, changing the highlights
on the pieces and board, as well as moving the shadows.

I'm looking for references on rendering shadows realistically.  Any journal,
text or paper pointer would be greatly appreciated.
