[net.cooks] Popcorn twist

adm@cbneb.UUCP (05/08/85)

	Here is a strange one:

Has anyone ever tried grated parmesan cheese on popcorn?
It may sound strange but it taste very good, try it
	instead of salt.

Another version of this is to mix the parmesean cheese
with the melted butter before you pour it on.
It really is delicious!

Yum, yum! Also try:

	paprika
Spike (a packaged spice and herb mixture)
brewer's yeast (actually, I hate yeast on poopcorn, but I know
		several people who like it)
just plain - no salt or anything

If you pop your corn in oil, try frying some garlic or ginger in it
before adding the corn.

I can imagine that this would be quite good -- now, if I can just get
the theaters to do it!-) Of course, if you are trying to cut down on
Sodium consumption, you have to keep in mind that Parmesan cheese is
*very* salty.

Other things that are good on popcorn are:

	chili powder
	garlic powder
	oregano
	hickory-smoked salt

Another interesting variation: Mix Granny Goose green onion
dip mix with the butter before pouring it on. YUM! - though
some are put off by the little green specs . . .

If you have a microwave oven, try puting hot sauce on the the popcorn
before popping it. Yum! It may work with other sauces too.

You also might try any of the flavored salts (garlic, onion) and peppers.
I have also used garlic and/or onion powder.

My favorite is to sprinkle the popcorn with Louisiana Red Hot!

Or has anyone tried also adding powered garlic!!! What a rush,
not to mention what your breath smells like in the AM hours!!!
Don't forget to use the Parmesan cheese too.
Mass quanties of water, beer or soda will be needed during this
experence.................

Not that strange. When I make scrambled eggs, I always use parmesan
cheese instead of salt.. My mixture is roughly 3 parts egg batter
(for me, 3 eggs and about 3 T. of milk) and 1-2 parts cheese. Adds
a nice tang, improves the texture, and eliminates the need for salt.

I've tried lots of sprinklings, and liked most of them. My VERY favorite
is to swipe the little cheese packets out of the macaroni and cheese
boxes and sprinle that on the popcorn. I never cared much for those mixes
anyway, and the macaroni can be used in salads, with butter and poppy
sees, or even in REAL macaroni and cheese.

I wrote a letter once to one of the companies (KRAFT, I believe) and
suggested they package that stuff in shaker bottles with popcorn in mind.
They even sent me a polite reply thanking me for my suggestion and said
they'd pass on my suggestion (I assumed to marketing). I've yet to see
it in the stores, however. If anyone knows of some such powdered cheese,
I'd appreciate hearing about it.
