[comp.graphics] SEGA Time Traveler - Hologram based game

slandrum@ntg.com (Stephen Landrum) (05/11/91)

Has anyone seen the new SEGA game _Time_Traveler_? There is one in the
TILT arcade (Fashion Island mall, San Mateo CA), and supposedly only one
other somewhere else on test in the US.

The game claims to be Hologram based. The cabinet is set up to simulate
a small 'stage'; the graphics appear to be pre-recorded video (probably
laser disc). The graphics float above the stage. The image does not
seem to be a true hologram, it appears (at least to me) to be a regular
video display, reflected in a curved mirror to give the appearance of
floating above the 'stage'. The only 3d aspect of the image is that it
appears to be curved (as if you were watching a movie projected into
the back of a cylinder).

What does anyone else know about this game and the technology used? Am I
just missing something when I view it?

I've directed followups to rec.games.video.arcade because it is one of the
highest traffic new groups I've seen, but discussion of the technology may
want to be directed to comp.graphics.
