[net.music] Kate Bush and Boston

blickstein@tle.DEC (Dave Blickstein) (10/10/85)

Doug,

I hope you don't take this personal, but I think you're hallucinating
about Kate Bushs popularity in Boston. I've tried to remain open minded
and learn to appreciate KB but I just didn't find anything interesting
about "The Dreaming" (I'm not into lyrics and didn't find the music to
stand on its own) and have been trying to hear R.U.T.H. but I have not
heard it on the radio, nor I have I seen the video on V-66 (which I watch
too frequently). My friends tell me that if I listened to WBCN I'd have
a better chance, but I just can't stand all the stupid things the DJs do
on that station.

P.S. By the way, regarding the "best guitarist" debate. I'm afraid to say
that you're all wrong. The best guitarist/musician of the 80s
is Steve Morse. In fact, he has been voted best overall guitarist in
Guitar Players annual poll for the last several years. Considering
that the people who voted are 99% of the serious guitarists in the
world, I think that this claim is practically unchallengeable. I defy
anyone to offer any more convincing empirical evidence for their
	candidate. :-)

There's always someone who doesn't believe the facts. Fact: "Hounds of
Love" is the number one album at Newbury Comics. Fact: "Hounds of Love"
is the number four album at the Harvard Coop. Fact: Strawberries ran TV
commercials (on V-66) and a half-page ad in The Boston Phoenix for
"Hounds of Love" (I can send you a xerox). Have I left out any
important Boston record stores?

Fact: "Running Up That Hill" is listed as the number one song on WFNX's
playlist for 9/9/85 and 9/23/85. Would you like me to send you a copy?
Fact: A playlist I have for WBCN (the number one station in Boston)
lists "Running Up That Hill" as the "Big Mattress [the morning drive
show] song of the week". Fact: V-66 said that is was their number one
video (this was about a month ago, so I have no idea how it's doing now
-- I got the video on tape and now have no reason to watch the stupid
station). They also used the music for "Running Up That Hill" in
commercials that said "V-66 rocks!" Which confused the hell out of me
as I dashed for the VCR (I have one of these on tape -- unfortunately
recorded right in the middle of my "Money For Nothing" video -- if you
don't believe me).

How many times have you listened to it?

But you don't have to take just my word for it now. The NME now says that
Kate Bush is the best solo artist England has ever produced. And we all
believe everything the NME says, right? (What's really strange is for
the NME to say this about an established artist, because traditionally
they just don't like anyone who makes money.)

> (I'm not into lyrics

Well then, I can't respect your opinion anyway. Or in any case, you are
just admitting that you are unqualified to judge "The Dreaming" or any
piece of music with lyrics for that matter. A song is not just a piece
of music plus a poem. It is a combination of the two that transcends
either or both, and must be viewed in that light.

> and didn't find the music to stand on its own)

It certainly does! Even though the lyrics and the music are wonderfully
interrelated, in this case they both are still masterpieces separately.

Like I just asked, how many times have you listened to it? I don't
expect everyone in the world to like the album, but you're just not even
qualified to comment unless you've listened to it 7 or 8 times. It's
very complex and cannot be fully appreciated on the first several
listenings.

> and have been trying to hear R.U.T.H. but I have not heard it on the
> radio

What do you listen to? CHR radio? Well then forget it. They use the
national charts and it's only 70 right now (but with a bullet) on the
national charts. (But it's 20-something on the dance music charts, so
yes you can hear it on your local disco station!)
