Does anyone have a recipe that looks too awful to eat but tastes
simply wonderful?  I guess shepard's pie is in this category (I
won't bother posting it, its so very common).  I'd be interested
to hear of any other Messy/tasty recipes out there.

You bet!

I have heard it called many and various things, but my standby name
for it is "Vince's Special".  A little fisheria in Menlo Park, CA
called Vinces produces this simply marvelous dish:

Equal parts cooked spinach, browned ground beef, and eggs.  (Easiest
portions are 1 package frozen spinach, 1/2 lb beef, 4 eggs)
Drain the spinach and drain the beef.  Put beef and spinach in frying
pan, break eggs into mixture and fry as if scrambling eggs.

Salt and pepper to taste.

Looks like a pile of .... .  Ah, but what a flavorful treat, and simple.

Chinese "Thousand Year Old Eggs" would seem to come in to this category.
The outside is transluscent, I think this was the shell, the next layer,
the white, is brown and the yolk is even darker brown.

I have to disagree about Sheperd's Pie.  Nothing awful or messy about that.
Barbecued things with sauce tend to be very messy but usually not simply
wonderful.  You get a little tough meat with lots of sauce which tastes
of vinegar, tomato ketchup, lighter fluid and yet more vinegar.

Ah yew impuning mah integrity, suh?  You certainly have my sympathy,
as it is clear that you have not tasted barbeque, only some poor
imitation of the most delicious route to intestinal cancer.  I am
continually dissapointed by the false claims made by restaurants up
here ("Southern Style Bar-b-que" my foot!)  In any case, don't judge
barbeque by your neighbor's backyard stuff or something you got from
any restaurant west of the Mississippi or north of the Mason-Dixon line
(well, maybe Texas is OK).  I hope you get the opportunity to try some
of the real stuff, smoked over hickory (etc) (not charcoal) and basted
with real barbeque sauce (not Kraft or the sweet & hot goop they call
barbeque sauce around here).
I place a vote for corned beef hash in scrambled egg for a messy yet tasty
dish.  Also, my mom (excuse me, mah maw) used to get us to eat oatmeal
by adding green food color and red hots (looked like Christmas).  I 
confess that when milk was added, it looked less than appetizing.  (but
the red hots really are good in oatmeal)

Someone wrote something about Shepard's Pie, saying that it was too common 
a recipie to post - I've been looking for a recipie for Shepard's Pie ever
since I had it once at a place called Canterbury Ales out on Long Island.

Please, Please mail a copy of a recipie for it to me!!!!!!!
(or Better yet, post it, as I am sure I'm not the only one who loves it.
