The Bay Area chapter of ACM/Siggraph - the Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques - announces its June meeting: MAKING A TECHNICAL EDUCATION WORK FOR YOU IN FILM AND VIDEO Scott Anderson Jonathan Luskin Senior Technical Directors Industrial Light & Magic 8:00 pm Tuesday, June 25 Exploratorium, McBean Theater San Francisco, CA People with a technical background working in computer graphics production often find that though they get to generate pictures, and are allowed to make choices about modelling techniques and rendering algorithms, they often do not get to make the creative decisions about the content of those pictures. Even though they may feel they could make a creative contribution, they are often limited to deciding how, rather that choosing what, to render. At this month's meeting, Scott and Jonathan will discuss what they found they needed to learn, in addition to algorithms and techniques, to end up in positions where they have some creative control over their work. Jonathan will discuss his recent experience as an engineer in art school (he recently returned from a year at the California Institute of the Arts, where he was enrolled in the character animation program), and Scott will talk about his education in the CG program at Brown and how far it took him towards becoming a technical director. Scott Anderson is a senior technical director at ILM whose work includes underwater effects for "The Hunt For Red October" and "The Abyss." He has also worked on a number of television projects including commercials for Diet Coke and "Star Tours," an upcoming PBS series. Jonathan Luskin is a senior technical director at ILM. Jonathan has worked on a number of motion picture projects including "Star Trek IV," "Willow," "The Abyss," "The Hunt For Red October," "Back To The Future II," as well as the Body Wars simulator ride at Disney's Epcot Center. In addition, he has worked on a number of television projects including "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and commercials for B.P. America and M&M Mars. Bay Area Siggraph meetings are always free and open to anyone.
