The problem with sand inside your steamer clams is really easy to
fix. You simply have to convince the little devils to spit out
their sand before you toss them in the pot. This doesn't require
a degree in clam psychology. After you dig up the clams, let them
sit in a bucket of clean seawater for a couple of hours, in which
time, the clams will spit out most of their sand.

WARNING - Do not let the clams see you putting the pot on the stove,
          they will become uncooperative and may even riot.
