[net.music] Setting recording levels

mah (03/12/83)

I have a Pioneer CT-6R cassette deck and occasionally record material
from the radio (Pioneer SX-6 (for anyone interested)). I basically know
how to set the recording levels, but I am not sure about a few things.

The deck has LED meters, and does not hold "peaks". Is it better
to adjust the controls so that the meters barely hit 0db or is will the
sound be better (not only louder) if they are set higher. What are the ad-
vantages and disadvantages of each of these settings and where should the
meters actually reach while recording?

Any information would be appreciated. By the way, I recently purch-
ased this Pioneer deck. Does anyone have an identical deck or have any
comments (good or bad) about it?

				Thank you,

Re: Setting record levels...

The recording level on a tape deck appears to be a function of the deck
and the tape being recorded. Apparently the various parameters of a
recording system are optimized for a particular tape. I have a Hitachi
deck; they own Maxell therefore the deck is optimized for Maxell Udxl
tapes. Hitachi also OEMs Maxell tapes under their own label.
I have never succeeded in saturating my UDXL I tapes with the
aforementioned deck, even when recording classical orchestral pieces.
I usually play the loudest section of music on the album and set the
level between +3 and +5 db. It gets harder when you can't preplay what
you're taping. Best to guess and not fiddle with it.
