[comp.unix.questions] Books on Wide Area Networks

PAAAAAR%CALSTATE.BITNET@wiscvm.wisc.EDU (03/17/87)

Has anyone published a handbook for normal people trying to
use 'worldnet' = UUCP+ARPA+JANET+BITNET+VNET+...

I'm thinking of the kind of book that explains that spaces *are*
significant (sometimes) in names or where the name servers are, or
how to find out what mailing lists are active on a given net,...

All in non-tech/low-tech language!

Preferably including a glossary (like 'flame', ':-)',...).

Thanks in advance

I can't say I've seen any books about the use of networks, but in the October
1986 issue of CACM (volume 29, number 10) there is a very good article called
"Notable Computer Networks", by John Quarterman and Josiah Hoskins that I found
very informative. It's kind of technical in nature, but would probably be a
good reference.
