[comp.unix.questions] unix related books

hari@arizona.UUCP (04/07/87)

Thanks to all those people who have responded to my request for unix related
books. Here is the list of the books that are recommended.

The C Programming Language - Brian W. Kernighan and Ritchie
                           - Prentice Hall

The Unix Programming Environment - Brian W. Kernighan and Rob Pike
                            - Prentice Hall

Advanced Unix Programming - Marc J. Rochkind
                            - Prentice Hall

These are the books recommended by almost everyone. Other books that are
mentioned include:

"Unix-in-a-Nutshell" handbooks, these are available at Nutshell Handbooks,
O'Reilly & Associates Inc., 171 Jackson Street, Newton, MA 02159

UNIX Communications, by Waite Group, Published by Howard W. Sams.

Unix for Super Users by Eric Foxley, Published by Addison Wesley. This
is recommended by two, supposedly good for explaining system calls.

C: A reference Manual - Harbison and Steel published by Prentice Hall

The System Unix by S.R Bourne, International Computer Science Series
ISBN=0-201-13791-7

The Unix Operating System, no one could remember the author's or publisher's
name.

A book which deals with Unix System V Internals by Bach is also mentioned.
There are some other books listed in Jim Joyce's list (unix shell related
books).
