Keep them away from your onions (bananas too, I believe). Many vegetables
give off a compound (ethylene oxide, I believe) which causes ripening.
Bananas and onions are loaded with it - if you want to ripen something,
put it in a paper bag with a ripe banana. As for potatoes, I keep them
in the hall closet with my bike, boxes, cross-country skis, and other things
that ripen slowly :-)
