I posted this query a few weeks ago, but somehow it didn't get posted. I apologize if it did get posted and I missed it. Here it goes: We seem to be having some problems with telnet and vt101 terminals. We have a VAX 11/750 running under 4.3BSD connected to a local network of several dozens systems, most running under various versions of UNIX (4.3, 4.2, Ultrix, V etc) and others under TOPS-20. As described in the 4.3 user's manual, one of telnet's bugs is its lack of flow control. Most of our terminals are DEC's vt101 which are identical to vt100, except that they can not be upgraded or expanded. Their input buffer is limited to 125 characters. The problem arises when we use telnet to connect to other hosts. Somehow telnet discards the flow control characters (DC1/DC3) and the terminal's input buffer overflows, printing a lot of substitute characters. This problem doesn't occur with other terminals with larger input buffers (eg vt220s). The XON/XOFF bit in the terminal is enabled. Again this overflow problem only occurs with telnet and vt101 combination. I've tried many combinations of settings for telnet and stty but so far I've been unable to come up with something that works. Anybody knows what parameters to these programs would solve the problem? I'm aware of the obvious solution of reducing the baud rate (from the current 9600) whenever a user wants to telnet to other hosts, but I'd prefer something more elegant and permanent.
