[comp.unix.questions] Searching for the \"ideal\" terminal

rbj@icst-cmr.arpa (Root Boy Jim) (05/08/87)

I'm working with a Facit Twist terminal, that at a first glare may look
like any other terminal on the market.

   3) I have no idea how widespread this terminal is outside Sweden. It is
sold by Ericson, that took over the Facit Corp. a few yers ago, and
Ericson is a multinational thing. But I still haven't seen the Twist
terminal in any other country than my own (== Sweden).

We have a few here, and they have a `Mime' label on them. They're kind of
neat, but at the small character resolution the comma and period are hard
to distinguish. I suppose colon and semicolon share this problem as well.

I am also interested in any terminal besides Ann Arbor which has
significantly more than 24 lines. Please don't mention blit class
terminals which require special hardware of software.

Although one CAN (and should when possible) use AT&T (formerly
Teletype) model 5620 or 630 Dot-Mapped Display terminals with
special host support software, they work just fine as dumb X3.64
CRTs also. If you know for a fact that you can never use them
in their "layers" mode of operation, then they're probably not
quite what you want for dumb large-screen operation, but if you
expect to be able to use them part of the time in layers mode
they're probably your best choice. I use mine in ordinary CRT
mode quite often, even though I have layers available (layers
mode has lower effective throughput for simple text display).

Try the W60 terminal from Wyse Technology... It has 43 lines
and 132 columns (in a readable font even). Distinguishing comma's
and dots are a breeze in this mode. Everything is a tad small,
but excellent resolution. The resolution on this monitor is
significantly better than all other wyse's that I have tried, as
well as several other terminals: Wyse50, 350, tvi955, Falco 5500,
Convergent PT, GT.

	I highly recommend it!
