How come, when I type in " cat > '\<rubout>'" on dartvax I get logged out? This is a VAX, running 4.3 BSD, and the exact typing sequence is: c a t <space> > <space> ' \ ^? ' ^m (Don't ask how I discovered this, I don't remember.) -- Don't tread on me. /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\><>' The irascible one. Earle R. Horton, H.B. 8000, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755

) How come, when I type in " cat > '\<rubout>'" on dartvax I get logged out? Gee, Earle, I dunno. I tried the same keystrokes on my vax running 4.3 and I created a file with a one-character name, that character having an ascii code of 0177. There was no problem with catting the file or deleting it. Maybe you shoud be asking your question locally?

April 1st is over here in net.land, so I have to assume that somebody has patched your UNIX to get rid of users typing in that weird command sequences - maybe there are some more: cat </dev/null >/dev/null, etc. :-) :-).
