I'm something of a neophyte in this area, having been tossed into the pit
with the Ultrix system without much preparation, and I'm trying to do my level
best.
What I'm thinking about right now is how to set up those pesky tape backups
onto those painfully slow TK-50 tapes. What I did was set up two shell
programs (about which an earlier posting has some questions) to do two
different levels of dump(8) backup.
Monthly, I take a level 0 dump (about 2 hours)
Daily, I take a level 2 dump (about 30 minutes).
Since I'm working with a couple of mammoth database files, there doesn't
seem to be a better way; 30 minutes appears to be the practical minimum.
The daily backups taken on Friday are kept longer than the others. The
monthly backups are kept off-site, nominally forever.
Any reasons to do this another way?
