[comp.unix.questions] 3b2 Specific Question

kdavis@well.UUCP (Ken Davis) (06/01/87)

Have any of you folks out there with at 3b2-300 been able
to configure a Hayes smartmodem bi-directional and use
uugetty? Would appreciate any help, if this is
possible.

This was discussed at length a year or so ago. Seems a smart
modem like the Hayes and uugetty on a 3b2 are incompatible.
The 3b2 tty drivers require CD (pin 8) to be hi on the modem for
it to send the dial codes. But if you set CD to be hi all the time
on the modem, then the 3b2 has no way of knowing when the calling
(inbound) party has hung up, and so the next caller on that line
is now in on the same session.
On chinet, I solved the problem (I use USRobotics Couriers) by
building a little black box that sits between the modem and port.
It uses a couple of edge triggerd timers to toggle the CD line down
and back up on all incoming and outgoing calls. This has worked
fine for over 2 years.

Try the program uutty (I just posted it, with some bug fixes). It
works better than uugetty

Extensive experimentation was done within the AT&T UNIX support group
on this issue a while back. I don't have a copy of what they finally
came up with, but the best was pretty ugly, involving sending modem
reset AT codes to the modem within the login string inside /etc/gettydefs.
It did work ok, except (something like) the first incoming call after
an outgoing call would get dropped immediately.

Rumor has it that SVR3.1 uucp will have provision for ignoring the CD
lead selectively within the Devices and Dialers files, so modems like
the Hayes will work just fine.
