[comp.unix.questions] Tar format question

rice@swatsun (Dan Rice) (08/11/87)

Can someone give me details on how to read a tar-format tape on a
non-Unix machine? I need to know such goodies as logical record length
and blocksize. I am interested specifically in reading tar tapes via Primos
(ugh!). Thanks.

The IEEE P1003.1 POSIX standard has a section on TAR format.
I wrote it about two years ago and it has been revised a
few times in committee.

I've written a TAR for Data General AOS/VS and MS-DOS so, from
experience, you shouldn't have too much trouble writing one for
other OS's.
