Does Microport UNIX V/386 or SCO UNIX V/386 handle windows? Can anyone with Sun 3 experience comment on the user interface of Microport UNIX? I want a UNIX workstation, and the Telecat/386 is still cheaper than the least expensive SUN 3/50 package, but I will need real windows to be able to perform my job (I currently use SCREEN with a vt220 compatible terminal). Do these System V's come with the Berkley "r" programs (rlogin, rcp, etc), or are you stuck with telnet and ftp?. How about C-shell, Korn shell, and screen editors? #include <local/standard_disclaimer.h> Patrick Wolfe Internet: pat@kai.com System Manager UUCP: {seismo,ihnp4,uiucuxc}!kai.com!pat Kuck & Associates, Inc. SCO normally includes "virtual terminals" to allow multiple full screen logins from the console. I'm told that it wasn't in some of the beta versions, I have no idea if it is in the regular release, but I assume that it will be available shortly. | |I want a UNIX workstation, and the Telecat/386 is still cheaper than the least |expensive SUN 3/50 package, but I will need real windows to be able to perform |my job (I currently use SCREEN with a vt220 compatible terminal). Your problem is finding a hi-res screen with a driver for either system. The last time I asked they didn't even support the 43 line mode of an EGA, much less any of the better modes. It would be easy but time consuming to write your own. | |Do these System V's come with the Berkley "r" programs (rlogin, rcp, etc), or |are you stuck with telnet and ftp?. No problem. They don't come with any enet support, allowing you to buy from a vendor who offers what you need. The Excelan. The last I hear they offered some of what you want, but not SMTP (what I want). | |How about C-shell, Korn shell, and screen editors? vi come with, MicroEMACS runs, I am told that GNU will run but I haven't been able to try it. ksh is available compiled for Xenix/286 and will run on 386, csh comes with. You can compile a 386 version of ksh if you have the source. -- bill davidsen (wedu@ge-crd.arpa) {uunet | philabs | seismo}!steinmetz!crdos1!davidsen "Stupidity, like virtue, is its own reward" -me
