Has anyone tried to used the 3.5 Utilities with the 3.51 operating system. Our new machines were shipped with 3.51 and were wondering whether the warning in the System Software manual was *ABSOLUTELY* sure! If there is a real problem (that I would run into immediately) I would like to know, otherwise what "drivers" might have changed that I use and would give me problems. I've been running my unixpc in that configuration for several weeks now. I've been using it pretty heavily, mostly compiling things, testing things, and generally getting it set up to do some serious work. Most everything seems to work just fine. -- Richard Foulk ...{dual,vortex,ihnp4}!islenet!richard Honolulu, Hawaii

The actual library is shipped in the foundation set, and all of the .a files are shipped in the development set. When you go to compile a file that uses this feature, the system will roll over when you try to run the product. There are also Lots of differrences in document preperation which should NOT affect you. -- :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: {mhuxu,u1100a}-----\ Mark Hilliard seismo!rochester!kodak!gizzmo!mark N2HHR {ethos,fthood}-----/

The shared library is an exe that gets auto loaded by the system and is shared by multiple processes. The contents of the .a files get bound to your program and become part of the exe (and never the twain will meet). Binding with the shared library requires linking with the shlib.ifile which gives the entry points into the shared library to the linker so that it can resolve references. If the shlib.ifile came with the OS and the shlib exe came with the Utilities (or vice versa) then you would have a problem. Whether the .a files and the shlib are of the same release should be irrelevent. What are you trying to say? David Albrecht

Finally, here is the latest word on the upgrade of the Release 3.5 software to the newer version 3.51, as just learned from talking with Mary Severin (201)581-6240 who handles the upgrades for software under AT&T maintenance contracts: 1) software currently under AT&T maintenance will indeed be upgraded from release 3.5 to 3.51 at no additional cost. 2) unlike the earlier upgrade from 3 to 3.5 (which was done at reduced cost even when the software was not under maintenance contract), the upgrade from 3.5 to 3.51 will require purchase of the newer release if the software is not covered by a maintenance contract with AT&T. 3) the shipment of upgrades for software under maintenance will be made by the end of September 87 at the latest. -- W.H.
