Maybe this is a common problem. I hope I have just missed something simple. Here goes: We have a 3B2/400 that is connected to 4 1200 baud modems. Currently, one of these lines is being used for incoming calls, and has a uugetty running. The other three are used for outgoing calls and have the (uu)gettys turned off. The four phone lines are set up on a rotary basis, so that an incoming call that finds a busy modem rolls over onto the next number. Ideally, I would like to have uugettys running on all four lines, to be able to service up to four incoming calls, or still be able to dial out on any of the four lines. However, what I have found is that I am unable to originate calls on any line with the uugetty running. It seems that uucp is looking for certain responses from the modem and/or distant end computer and the uugetty is grabbing those characters and treating them as login attempts. Is there a universally accepted scheme of handling this? Does one not tell the uugetty to respawn in inittab and somehow cause it to be killed and restarted before and after each outgoing call? Is uugetty supposed to have smarts that getty does not have and somehow not do reads during the outgoing call? As I said, I hope this a matter of my naivete and there is a simple solution. Many thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions John Kennedy !ihnp4!ihlpl!csc!johnk (703) 876-1144
