I have a very simple question (which means it probably has a very long confusing answer). I am trying to mail to various places outside of the local cluster of machines. The configuration looks like this: woodshop (3b2/310 SysV 3.0) (my home machine) | |------------------ s.cs.uiuc.edu (has notes/news) | LAN / ethernet | f.cs.uiuc.edu (vax, 4.[23] BSD) (local net gateway) | | ether : department backbone | a.cs.uiuc.edu (vax, 4.[23] BSD) ( department gateway ) | | ?? : I don't know..assume UUCP/phone/sat link/etc. | outside world (ARPA style) The system is set up so that (alledgedly) mail that can't be delivered directly by ether connection is sent up to 'a', which has all the mail routing tables. I only have access to machines on the local net, except for f, which I can't get to. The problem is that I am having a lot of difficulty trying to convince f to send my mail on unless I explicitly route things, and since I don't have access to any mail path information (except for machines directly on the woodshop/f net), that's often impossible. Is there any way to say in an address "send to here, and then use this address from there", e.g. "forward this to a and then mail to x@distant.machine.edu"? I want to use explicit routing up to a big gateway, and then '@' notation from there on. Sendmail does something with '%' sometimes, but I can't find any documents that say anything about addressing. Any replies, either notes or e-mail would be appreciated. Don't be suprised if you don't get a reply. Alan M.
