[comp.unix.questions] nroff help

dale@altnet.UUCP (dale) (11/06/87)

I have a system III machine for which I have acquired a DIABLO 630
printer. I would like nroff to understand this printer. What do I need
and how do I do it?. There are macros? for the daisy 300/450 and some
HP terminals, but no daisy wheels I ever heard of.
Any help would be appreciated. I can be reached at 408-964-6700 during
the day and 408-446-9816 at night. Or email me at
{dlb,altnet,auspyr}!eridani!dale or uunet!altnet!dale.

That's DASI 300 & 450, not daisy. A DASI 300 was a HyType I printer
and a DASI 450 was a HyType II printer, as I understand it. The
Diablo 630 is a HyType II printer, I think, so use "nroff -T450".

Unfortunately, the -T450 switch does not really work perfectly for the 630.
I don't have the manuals with me at the moment, but as I recall there were
some minor changes in the 630's command set that screw up 'tbl' and 'eqn'.
Also, there are several different flavors of the 630: a basic 630 and a
more "intelligent" version. The more intelligent version would have a fully
extended HPR05 board that performs a lot of word processing functions ---
proportional spacing, underlining, shadow print, etc. We were unable to most
of those features until we got our hands on Bruce Townsend's table building
programs. Our ps mode still s*cks (thanks to bugs in nroff), but at least
we get pretty good tables.

There is a package that came down the net before The Great Name Change
which could be used to build character tables for nroff. I am willing
to send it out if need be, but I'd much rather have someone figure out
what archives it's in so I don't duplicate someone else's job.

I am the author of the "table" utility referred to above. It
is for use with USG systems that do not have the ability to prepare
new nroff terminal driver tables. I have recently sent a new version
to the moderator of comp.sources.unix (two weeks ago), but have not
heard anything back, nor have I seen any articles recently in that
group. Perhaps he is on vacation, or busy with other things. In any
case, I hope to have it distributed net-wide soon!

The new version is much better than the old. Some bugs have
been found and fixed, and there is a better Makefile. Also, for those
who have HP-UX, with nroff supporting Kanji characters, the old table
utility is broken. The new one will support this.
