[comp.unix.questions] troff for HP Laserjet?

jim@hpiacla.HP.COM (Jim Rogers) (01/15/88)

I have been using EROFF on HP-UX systems for about a year now.

EROFF works either with soft fonts or with font cartridges.
It has been very reliable. There were a couple of occasions when I
called Elan for support. Their support was always fast and accurate.

The packages do what they advertise. I have not found any limitation
on the number of pages allowed for a single document. The largest
document I have produced with EROFF has been in the order of 100 pages
plus tables of contents, tables of figures, and tables of equations.

EROFF runs equally well on the Laserjet+ and on the Laserjet II.

We have used the bit-mapped mode to produce pictures of raster dumps
from HP9000 systems and from Macintosh systems. The results have
been completely satisfactory.

We have been using Eroff for over 2 years for printing a very large
documentation set of a UNIX sw application. This manual set amounts to
some 3000 pages, although has been printed in smaller pieces (100-500
pages). We use Hewlett Packard 9000/300 and 500 computers, with Hewlett
Packard LaserJet+, LaserJet500, and LaserJetII printers.

We make *extensive* use of the table and bit map inclusion faciltity, as
well as the pic, grap and eqn capabilities. Last fall we began using Eview
on X windows to preview documents prior to printing.

The product is outstanding in quality and performance. Elan really has not
had to provide support, the product is that good.
