[comp.unix.questions] Ethernet controllers

ake@umecs.UUCP (]ke Sandgren) (01/29/88)

Hello everybody!

We are going to buy an ethernet controller and I would like to
know what the preferrable one is.
I am considering the following:
   Dec DEUNA or DELUA
   3Com
   Excelan EXOS 204
   Interlan

The system in question is a Vax 11/750 with 4.3BSD.
The rest of our machines are SUN 3/160's, Vax 11/780 (VMS, DEUNA),
a Cyber 805 with CDC-net and Kinetics boxes for our Mac's.

Please, send me any pro's, con's and general info about these
controllers you have. And send it via mail so that I won't have
to look for replys all the time...

BRL had tried the Interlan NI1010A, the Excelan, and the DEUNA controllers.
All worked. The Interlan being the best, in our opinion. The DEUNA has
been rumored to cause problems in the 750's because it draws too much
power from the bus. It seemed to work fine in our 780's. The Excelan
should be used in dumb mode (that is EXOS sucks, use the hosted TCP/IP)
We made use of that board in that way. If you are stuck writing a driver
for the board yourself (i.e., you are not running 4.3), the Interlan
board is the easiest to program of the group.

I'm very skeptical of the 3Com product.
