As usage of our Unix box (an Encore Multimax running a BSD 4.2 lookalike) increases, we find that user account management is a real headache. We are looking for software that will help us generate user accounts quickly and intelligently. Features we would like: Given some basic information about an account (e.g. department and last name of user), generate a unique username, uid, and directory. Be able to take a large list (such as a class roster) of people and generate accounts for them. Be able to generate "random" account names in large numbers. Be able to generate passwords for users. Be able to generate reports. Be able to disable accounts without removing them. Most important, be able to remove accounts in large numbers. Also important, the source code would almost certainly have to be available, unless the package is REALLY flexible. It would be awful nice if the package is public domain or at least low priced. Oh of course. The program beter be damned near bulletproof. We don't want to screw things up. If anyone has such a package, or knows of such a package, please let us know. If anyone is interested in such a package, please let us know. We'll forward any information we receive. If we don't hear about anything, we plan to write such a package. (We have written such packages for VMS and PRIMOS. They're not real great, or real portable, but they do the job.) If anyone would be interested in such a package, let us know, and we'll send it out if we write it. Please respond by email if you can. We will summarize to this newsgroup. -- Mark Draughn +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Mark Draughn UUCP: ...ihnp4!iitmax!draughn Computer Science Department BITNET: SYSMARK@IITVAX Illinois Institute of Technology (312) 567-5334 Chicago, Illinois 60616 This space for rent.
