[net.cooks] Authentic Jewish Recipes - a pointer to a restaurant

For those of you too lazy or busy to cook all this stuff...

This is not a recipe, but a pointer to a restaurant that can provide
you with almost all the food listed by Barry in his article. The place
to go is Sammy's in New York City. It is not kosher. It is called a Jewish-
Roumanian restaurant. The food is great if you like lots of garlic. It
is expensive, but you get entertainment with your meal. It's kind of
like going to a bar mitzvah. Wild singing, everyone there gets into the
spirit. It's great fun. Warning: it's in the Bowery. I don't remember the
street. Maybe Chrystie St. Look it up in the phone book.
Some choice dishes are chopped liver, stuffed derma(kishka),
breaded veal chops that hang over the ends of the plate, skirt steak
that also hang over the plate and with more garlic than a small city
uses in a week, and egg creams for dessert. [ For those of you un-
familiar with egg creams, they contain neither egg nor cream. They
are seltzer, milk and chocolate syrup.] We usually order a bottle of
Absolut vodka. It comes frozen in a block of ice. You drink shots of
it and boy, can you get wasted that way! Beware! The price is $40
a bottle!!! The wine is also outrageously over-priced, and lousy to
boot, but after the vodka, who cares!
It's an experience we treat ourselves to about 2 times a year.
If you're not Jewish, don't worry. You'll at least be able to sing along
to the Broadway show songs!
Another warning: DON'T LET THE WAITER ORDER FOR YOU! THAT'S HOW
YOU GET $50 AND $60 PER PERSON DINNER BILLS!
