[net.cooks] need recipe for granola bars

devine@asgb.UUCP (Robert J. Devine) (09/04/85)

Well, compulsive shopper that I am, I just bought four pounds
of honey and almond granola (ya see, there was this discontinued
line of granola ...).

Rather than eat all of it as-is, does anyone have a recipe for
making granola bars?

Thanks,

These are more a cookie than a granola bar, but I'm sure they
are no worse for you than the granola bars in the store.

Trail Bars from the America's Best Cookbook*

1 large egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup (packed) brown sugar
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 cup butter, softened (Makes it easier to cream)
1 cup all-purpose flour
2/3 cup rolled oats
3 cups granola cereal with raisins and dates (I'm sure you can just throw
in some raisins if the granola doesn't have any)
1 can (14 oz) condensed milk

	Preheat the oven to 350F.
Combin the egg, vanilla, brown sugar, syrup, and butter
in a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until creamy. (Hard work!)
Stir in the remaining ingredients and mix well. (More hard work!)
Spread the batter in an ungreased 11x17 inch jelly roll
pan. Bake for 30 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.

We take them along on ski trips. They are VERY popular. They
are sweet, but at least the sweetness isn't all the same. The maple
syrup gives is a great flavor.

* The America's Best cookbook is one of the best I've ever invested
in. The money from the sale of the cookbook benefits the US Ski Team.
Go out and buy one! It is one of the most thoroughly tested cookbooks
ever. The recipes are from all over the US (hence the name America's
Best).
