We have noticed a problem with RCS. If you have header information in your file and have a file "Makefile.anything", the header info doesn't get properly commented out upon checkout. New lines added by RCS to the header info in the file are not commented out. The header info is in proper format via rcsit. The problem doesn't occur if the makefile is called "Makefile" or "makefile". It also doesn't occur for shell files (which have the same format for comments as Makefiles) no matter what the name is. One fix we have found is to 'rcs -c "# " Makefile.whatever'. This will properly (for makefiles) put a comment header at the begin- ning of every line of header info in the file. It seems reasonable though that if RCS is smart enough to put a comment header on every line of a shell script (no matter what the name), it could do the same for Makefiles. If y'all have any solutions let me know.
