I've tried to reply to the replies to my original news posting (why doesn't PRIME ascii register as ascii on UNIX), but many of my replies got bounced. Problem turned out to be that PRIME turns on an eighth bit, and one solution that worked was to run file through C routine to turn it off. I also received suggestions that the same end can be accomplished through appropriate use of 'dd' or 'tr', but I'll have to wait to try those until I need to restore another PRIME file (the original beast being deleted after translation). Thanks! Sue Hough
