[comp.unix.questions] AT&T 3B1

FRAZIER%AFGLSC.SPAN@star.stanford.edu (05/10/88)

The 3B1 is an outstanding machine for almost any
kind of Unix based activities. My machine has 2 MB RAM,
64MB hard disk running SYSV rel3.1. I've got Gnu Emacs 18.49,
all the system development tools etc. I've found it to be
a very handy little machine. (Every bit as useful as the
larger boxes at work for all intents and purposes.)
It's a great machine for the price....
The only drawback is that the User Agent has a few
security holes (probably more than a few) associated with
it, but I've found all of them to be fairly easy to stop
up.

C'mon. The UA on the 3B0 is the biggest crock of [expletive deleted]
I've ever seen. If AT&T didn't give us the things for free, we wouldn't
bother. Other than that the machines major problem is that it comes
with one of the slowest hard drives I've ever seen and that it had the
System V terminal braindamage out of the box that requires each an every
use to fix the security and other problems (like tiny memory limits).

Now that you can buy them from salvage dealers for $300 they aren't
that bad, but when AT&T was actually selling them they were a bit
overpriced.
