I really wonder why root inode is 2. In the old ages it was 1 (CACM 74). When did it change ? I'd like to give an answer to my students this week !

I seem to recall that it changed between 6th and 7th Edition, i.e. around 1977. I think inode 1 was reserved for chaining bad blocks onto, but I don't recall that being implemented.
