[net.music] T. Rex

agb@reed.UUCP (Alexander G. Burchell) (10/07/85)

Hi --

I had heard of a band called T. Rex before, but had never heard
their music until last night. The album I listened to was "electric
warrior", and it contained the original version of "bang a gong", a song
lately coining money for The Power Station. Well, I *greatly* prefer
the original!
Can anyone give me some more information on T. Rex? (Forgive my
ignorance, I was born too late...) I would really appreciate some sort of
discography, what the band members are doing now (or when they died...),
etc.

				Thanks,

Boy, do I feel old when you talk about the
original version of "Bang a Gong"!!

You're right, it is MUCH better than Power Station's
version.

I can't give you more discography on T. Rex, but
I can tell you that Marc Bolan, lead singer, etc.,
of T. Rex, died on September 16, 1977; cause of
death escapes me at this time.

Bang A Gong was one of my favorite songs when
I was in eighth grade!

Cheers!

He drove an Austin Mini Cooper of his girl friend and hit a tree somewhere
in England because he left the road in a curve driving too fast.
I can remember very well because I was a big fan of T.Rex since their hit
METAL GURU. Today I prefer other kind of music, but in these days....

I've never been much of a T. Rex fan myself, but I can tell you the basics:

T. Rex was essentially the brainchild of Marc Bolan (nee Feld), who founded
the "group" in 1967 as "Tyrannosaurus Rex". Originally an acoustic "flower
power" duo (Bolan and partner Mickey Finn), they shortened their name around
1969, adding additional members and "going electric". Finn left around this
time and was replaced by Steve Took.

Bolan/T. Rex were tremendously popular in the UK during the "glitter era"
of the early 70's, although they were never especially successful stateside.
"Bang A Gong" was their only real hit in the US.

Bolan died in a car crash around 1977; I believe Took died shortly thereafter.

A lengthy article (including discography) about Bolan/T. Rex appeared in
Goldmine some time ago. Send a USnail address if you'd like a copy.

PS: Bolan was reputedly the real author of Ringo Starr's "Back Off Boogaloo".

Oops... I think it was actually Finn that replaced Took. Sorry...

Oops... come to think of it, it was Finn that replaced Took. Sorry...

For T. Rex fans interested, the radio station that I work at recently
received an album called "T.Rextasy", which, as you might guess, is sort of a
greatest hits album. I don't know if this will become available in record
stores or not, but if anyone's interested in knowing anything about it, I
would be happy to answer any questions I can.
Hope this didn't bore you too much.
