[net.cooks] Natural vs Not

There are two ways in which white sugar is bad for you. One is that it
is sugar, and in this sense honey, brown sugar (which is just white
sugar with some molasses added. Surprised? Don't be), et al. are just
as bad. The other way in which refined things are bad is that the
fiber and various other things have been removed. Lack of adequate fiber
in your diet leads to such nasty conclusions as diverticulitis (where
crap gets stuck to the inner wall of your intestine and eventually
causes a bulge, which fills with more crap, etc. Gets quite painful
eventually and may require surgery), etc. SO - it ain't going to kill
you to eat white flour or sugar or white bread, AS LONG AS you also eat
your carrots, etc (you know, rabbit food), fruits, nuts, beans, etc.
You can get a sort of handle on the amount of fiber you are getting by
measuring the approx. time stuff spends in you GI system. An easy way to
do this is to eat something very identifiable (like beets or a tsp of
green food coloring, preferably in something edible like oatmeal) and then
watch your stool for the next day. The main benefit of fiber is pushing
stuff through your guts and scubbing the sides. The time from mouth to
toilet should be less than 24 hours. If it is longer, eat more celery.
Another thing that can be beneficial is to eat peppery food from time
to time. Pepper irritates the lining of the intestines, which secretes
more mucus to protect itself. This acts as lubrication, and will help
keep stuff from sticking to the sides (kind of clean you out, just like
you always knew it did). A third, and very helpfull thing to do is the
colon massage. Lay on your back and push with your three middle fingers,
perhaps with support from your other hand, on your lower gut. Move the
hands in a clockwise direction, massaging the colon as you go. You may
well notice a patchy stool, with very dark parts that had been stuck to
your insides earlier.
