[comp.unix.questions] bbs for unix based systems

koala@ddsw1.UUCP (Karl Meiser) (06/25/88)

I myself should be suggesting my own work, premature as it is. Currently
i am working on a message system (run from the shell) but it is no where
near complete.

I will however suggest AKCS. Infact, the system i am currently at is
the home of AKCS. This software has linking prgs, etc, so that you can
connect systems together by sending new items back and forth. This
system currently connects 4 systems, and the more the better. For more
information, contact Karl Denniger at (312)566-8909 voice, (312)566-8911
or (312)566-8912 for the system. You can also send mail to ..!ddsw1!karl

I think I saw an answer to the bbs for unix system question
fly by. Someone recommended XBBS. They said you could
get it from (714) 898-8634
POC Sanford Zelkovitz

Hope I got my fax straight!

Does anyone know about or use XBBS? Is it Public Domain or commercial?
Do you get source? Above all, does it support Kermit?

It's free use. I can't remember if it's really PD, but you don't pay
to use it.

You get source and it supports a number of protocols as separately run
processes. I haven't seen the later versions, but the one I have is not
remotely table driven, so adding or deleting protocols involves hacking
a huge switch statement. I changed mine to use the rzsz stuff for all
[XYZ]modem stuff, too.

Comment: XBBS has a reasonable user interface, and people like it. The
version I have is not the latest, and I understand that improvements
have been made in modularity and coding techniques, so my impressions of
the code are probably out of date.

You might also consider UNaXcess, available from Brandon Allbery,
allbery@ncoast.
