[comp.unix.questions] Fastest way to backup 300MB

rcsmith@anagld.UUCP (Ray Smith) (08/10/88)

I have a situation where I need to be able to backup 300MB of data
in less than 30 minutes. This will probably be done on a Sun system.

My question is, what would be the fastest way of doing this?

	- Copy all of the files to a removable drive?
	- Dump to tape?
		- Which format (tar, dump, cpio, tpio)?
		- What kind of blocking factors?
		- Which tape drives and controllers are fastest?
		- Should we use an Exabyte(sp) drive?
	- Remote dump over Ethernet?(nah)

Anyone have any thoughts on these questions?

Thanks,
Ray

The Summer 1988 issue of Sun Technology has an add by Interscience
Computer Corporation in which they claim to "back-up 1.2 GigaBye
in 30 minutes with our cartridge tape drive".
Further details;	1.2 Gigabye capacity, formatted
			764 Kb/sec transfer rate
			512 Kb cache
			MegaTape standard 1/2" cartridge
			Pertec or SCSI interface
			Advanced error correction
			Auto cartridge load
			Extensive diagnostics and data calibration

They can be reached at (818) 707-2000.
I don't know this company other than by this add; I have no connection
to them whatsoever. I just happened to finish reading this magazine
just before your message.

sun sells fugitsu gcr tape drives that work fairly well.. on a lightly
loaded system, i've seen them back up an entire eagle (~500mb) in 30 minutes.
it takes 4 tapes or so, however, even at 6250 bpi. this definitely is not
fastest (disk to disk probably is), but is sure straightforward.
dump was the utility that did this, btw.

Cut out the middleman, call Megatape Corporation Direct:
