[comp.unix.questions] identifying a backup tape on a drive

tpc@leibniz.UUCP (Tom Chmara) (09/09/88)

There's a group within our organization who are trying to provide an
enhanced SDE. One problem they've identified is in identifying the
particular tape mounted on a drive. Is there any way to label a
tape in UNIX? I've never had to worry about this (usually I'm only
dealing with my own tape, and therefore already KNOW what's on it
and that it's the tape I want), but it's been raised as a concern.
	Thanks for your time...

For UNIX(tm) System V I think /etc/labelit(1M) will do what you want.
